What it is and when it suits

A tarmac (asphalt) driveway gives a smooth, black, low-maintenance finish that suits most homes. It's quicker to lay than block paving and copes with daily car use for many years.

New construction vs resurfacing

A new tarmac drive means excavation, membrane and a compacted sub-base, then a base course and a surface course. If your current drive has a solid base, a new surface course laid over the top (resurfacing) costs less. We'll show you which applies during the survey.

Drainage and edging

Front drives over 5m² must drain to a permeable area or soakaway to avoid planning permission. We design the falls, channels and edging, including kerbs, blocks or setts, as part of the quote.

What affects the price

The main factors are area, excavation depth and spoil removal, existing base condition, edging and drainage, access, and whether you add a contrasting border. You get a fixed written price after the survey.

Aftercare

New tarmac stays slightly soft in hot weather for the first few months. Avoid power-steering on the spot and sharp stands such as motorbike stands or skip feet. We'll give you a clear time for when you can drive on it.

Questions

How long does a tarmac drive take?

Most domestic drives take 2 to 4 days, depending on size and how much digging is needed.

Tarmac or tar and chip?

Tarmac is smooth and modern. Tar and chip is more rustic, grips better and is often better value on long drives.
